Announcing Startup of the 21st Century Literary Fiction Book Club
Are you interested in engaging with other readers/thinkers in studies of contemporary literature
and the inspiring power of storytelling? In the new year we plan to have a book club to
exchange our ideas and appreciation of literary fiction from the last two decades.
About every month or so, we will share our perspectives on a thought-provoking work of literary
fiction that reflects the diversity, complexity, and innovation of contemporary storytelling. We
expect the book club’s meetings to be open and participatory, and to take a ‘study group’
approach as opposed to a ‘what I liked or didn’t like’ discussion. We will explore themes,
writing styles, character development, and the broader cultural context.
The book club will meet at Watershed Books on Main Street in Brookville on a Sunday
afternoon every 4-5 weeks starting on January 19.
To kick things off, here is a list of a few suggested titles for our first two meetings:
● Goldfinch by Donna Tartt;
● The Road by Cormac McCarthy;
● Leaving the Arocha Station by Ben Lerner;
● The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon;
● Life of Pi by Yann Martel
If you are interested in joining, send an email to Jerry Cichocki at jerrycichocki@gmail.com and
include your top two choices from the list above. If you have an additional title or two to add to
the list, include them in your email too. I will tally up the selections and send everyone the top 2
picks with other details.
With your participation, we will connect with fellow book lovers, exchange ideas, and deepen
our appreciation of modern literary voices.
