Class Ring
Karen Griffith

Why were you in that box?
I’m in my 60’s now.
I worked to pay for you
Oh was I shy then.

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be
Or how I would get to that
Grounded grown-up place.
In my teens everything seemed to challenge me.

Oh class ring how I have changed
Since I last wore you. I used to tell
Everyone I was 26
When I was 15

I thought everyone
Had it all figured out by 26.
Well I came out of my shell
I don’t hide behind my 70’s bangs any more.

I tried different jobs, different places
Different marriages, different spaces.
Now I feel happy
Being in that grown-up place.
