Warmer by Kirke Wise

In my winter of discontent
I searched through the lonely field
In the barren frozen snow
For a life that warmth could yield

Far across the cloudy skies
The sunlight was merely hinting
Of some warmer times to come
By its occasional glinting

Though barren fields awaited
Coldness rife against my life
There was a clarity in the crystals
Winter icicles sharp as a knife

But this was a time for torpor
While the trees could rest each day
As the animals slept in their burrows
We all waited for a warmer day

Reflecting on my creation
The gifts God had given to me
An awareness above the creatures
And the power to do as I please

And I could have stayed inside
But that wasn’t in my nature
Because the seasons of our lives
Are just little more than a vapor

Like the clouds of wispy cold
Winter’s freeze growing deep
Only looking forward to summer
Warmer memories we could keep

So I could only hope for them
A new Spring when they arise
But I could only hope for me
It would be warmer in all our lives
