Puppy Love by Peggy Zortman

In spring a young dog’s fancy turns to thoughts of…LOVE!

Chase – Former Shelter Dog has had a busy day and is taking a much-needed nap so I, his Missus, am making his report.

About a year ago our neighbor adopted a dog. Abby had some…issues. Add to that a new family, new location and new rules – I could only imagine how confused and perhaps defensive this young dog might be. To compensate Abby barked…at everything…we called her Blabby Abby.

Abby and Chase

It’s been a while since Abby moved in and things have improved. She’s lost weight and her coat is soft and shiny…but she still talks a lot. She’s become a very lovely, lively, friendlier dog. Chase has taken notice.

This summer Abby earned the right to run to our house un-chaperoned just as Chase goes to her house. They’ve become close friends.

They run together, chase each other and do a lot of nose bumping and sniffing (Kissy-Kissy I call it); then each goes his or her own way.

Chase often goes to Abby’s house, sits at the door and asks if she can come out to play…and many times she can. In turn Abby comes to Chase’s house and asks for him…and many times he’s allowed out.

I’m thinking Cupid may have been busy lately because this relationship has gotten much more serious. Chase knows when his girlfriend is on her way even before we hear her. He moans, groans, wines and complains as if he’s in pain. If that doesn’t get our attention he barks.

Abby isn’t shy about asking for her boyfriend either. She will sit at the door and bark…and bark…and bark.

This morning we let Chase have his early morning run. He ran straight up the path and through the woods to Abby’s house. As I watched, the neighbor’s door opened and Abby joined him. They did their Kissy-Kissy; they ran and played tag then each dog returned to respective homes.

This afternoon Abby came calling and Chase went out to meet her…more Kissy-Kissy, more running and more tag – then Chase went hunting. Abby doesn’t seem to understand the attraction of scurrying, nose-to-ground, in search of anything so they parted company.

Abby is very bossy and Chase is very proud of his independence…could a broken heart be in their future?

This evening Chase was outside with me when Abby came out her door. At first Chase ignored her and she ignored him; but it wasn’t long until she came looking for him. They did a little more Kissy-Kissy had a fast run around the yard then the two of them headed up the path and through the woods to Abby’s house.

Our Former Shelter Dog has been an adventure since the day we brought him home. He never ceases to amaze and entertain…and sometimes worry us. We have no regrets.

Maybe you should give a shelter pet a chance…the rewards far outweigh the costs.

This is Missus signing out for Chase.
