Poem by Cindy Scully
It’s after midnight and I just can’t sleep,
I’ve got a strange feeling that’s running deep,
A memory that just won’t go away,
About a man and boy walking on a long-ago day.
An image, warm and clear, and seems so real,
An arm around my shoulder, I swear I can feel,
My name from somewhere close drifts into my ear,
I look around the room to see if someone is here.
And then the phone rings; it’s my mama’s voice,
She said, “Your daddy is gone, but don’t cry, rejoice,
He had the richest life a man could know,
Because of all the love he was willing to show.”
For some words come easy but he had few,
He loved us with his actions and we always knew,
A twinkle in his eyes, a smile, a certain look,
We never doubted his love and gave back all we took.
All my life I’ve been touched by love,
So understated, you didn’t think much of,
And because of the love he gave away,
He’ll walk with his boy on another day.
