Easter Bunny

Chase here – Former Shelter Dog reporting…

Easter! This is apparently an important day to my humans. They talk about Easter Church services, Easter flowers, Easter dinner, Easter eggs and Easter candy…and they talk about the Easter Bunny.

That last word, Bunny, got my attention. According to Mister The Easter Bunny (There is only one…just like Santa) arrives secretly during the night before Easter Sunday. He leaves colored eggs, and Easter Baskets full of delicious treats.

Treats! That’s another word that got my attention. I decided I needed to find this Easter Bunny.

I started by taking a walk to the Bunny Haven Condos to interview Velvet B. and Hop A. Long, my sister and brother bunnies.

What they told me just fueled my curiosity (that means now I REALLY had to know). It seems that all winter a wild bunny has been visiting them in the dark of night. He, it is a boy, eats any food that drops through their patio floor. Things like pellets, lettuce and now and then a carrot. He never talks, but eats his fill then hops off into the woods.

That night after Missus took me out for last call I made sure the door didn’t latch and later when everyone was asleep I pushed it open to sneak out and hide in the bushes so I could watch for the wild one.

He cautiously (that means he was watching all around) found his way under the condos and started eating. I hadn’t been seen. I approached him slowly so as not to alarm him and just then…

Mister turned the light on and called my name. Busted! I went home.

The next day I returned to talk with my brother and sister. They had some information for me. Apparently the wild one returned later to finish his meal and they asked him if he knew The Easter Bunny.

“No,” he said, “But I’ve heard of him.” Some neighbor children say he leaves colored eggs and treats hidden in their yard every year.

The next day was Easter Sunday, so once more I stood watch…this time just inside the door. He wouldn’t get by me I vowed…but my pillow was soft and warm and I fell asleep.

Easter morning dawned bright and sunny; I stretched, yawned, scratched a few itchy spots, yawned again and went looking for Mister and Missus.

“Good morning, Chaser!” they greeted me cheerfully, “Did you find your Easter Basket?”

My what? I thought, there must be a mistake, but then Mister explained I had to hunt for it.

Right away I checked my food dish – not there. Well then, it must be outside – not there. I came in feeling pretty low (that means sad) thinking the Easter Bunny had missed me.

My tail drooping, I made my way toward my man cave and as I walked by the table – THERE IT WAS!

A basket as pretty as you can imagine, heaping full of biscuits sat right there on the dinning room table. There was even a colored egg and a pretty little bunny.

That evening I was able to sneak out again. I took a carrot to the Bunny condos and dropped it where the wild one would find it. I’ll never be sure if he is The Easter Bunny, but I needed to say thank you to someone and that little fellow sure looked like he could use his own Easter treat.

Happy Easter Everybody!
