Local Literary Event Series: Author David Taylor
Historian and Writers Block Group participant David Taylor completed a 280-page book entitled The Way We Were: Brookville, Pennsylvania through the Camera’s Lens. It consists of a collection of hundreds of historic photos of this remarkable historic community, most of which have never been published before. Each page profiles a particular historic building or viewshed, past or present, in Brookville and is accompanied by text explaining the context of the image.
Taylor, who is also a board member for the Jefferson County Historical Society, greeted members of the public at the History Center gift shop. Taylor says the idea for the book came from an acquaintance on Facebook, who recommended that Taylor write a book after he had posted several old images of Brookville scenes on the group page Brookville Pennsylvania Photo Project. The group has well over 2,000 members– people who live in Brookville or grew up in Brookville and moved away. Many members encouraged Taylor as he continued forward with his book idea.
During his book signing, Taylor revealed that he was completely sold out in less than an hour. He had taken mostly pre orders to start, but sold all his extra copies right away. He offered to do a reprint in January and took down the names of anyone who stopped in looking to purchase a book. He used LaBue Printing in DuBois to produce the book.
Taylor is also set to have an article published with The Watershed Journal as an Online Exclusive for the upcoming Winter Edition. He admits he hasn’t thought much about doing another volume after his first book, but doesn’t rule it out completely.
